Intensive impingement & entrainment sampling
Pisces Conservation completed 4 years of intensive 24-hour impingement samples at 2 UK nuclear power plants, in connection with the proposals for new-build nuclear stations. This sampling provides an unparalleled volume of data on fish impingement, and on the state of fish stocks in the adjacent seas.
Our sampling has provided data on:
  • Nearly 70 species of fish
  • 14 BAP scheduled species
  • 15 crustacean species
  • Diurnal, tidal and seasonal cycles
  • Jellyfish and ctenophores
  • Size, age, weight, and length-weight

In addition, we have designed and commissioned a fully automated and computer-controlled entrainment sampler (image left), capable of sampling up to 25 litres/second in hourly units over a 24-hour period. The sampler is currently in use evaluating fish egg, larvae and plankton entrainment in a UK nuclear station.

Finally, we have completed several projects analysing long series of phyto- and zoo-plankton samples for other clients, carrying out baseline surveys around proposed power station sites.

Pisces staff have long experience in all aspects of monitoring, and Pisces can supply a team of up to 12 members for impingement / entrainment monitoring work anywhere in the UK. All our staff are experienced in working on large industrial sites, and are vetted for working on UK nuclear sites. In addition, certain staff members hold current Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) registration, CCNSG Safety Passports, and are familiar with boat work, trawling and grab sampling.
