44 - Fish sampling, Grain, Kent
Since 2012, Pisces Conservation have been carrying out fish and crustacean impingement monitoring at a CHP gas-fired power station on the Isle of Grain, north Kent, for E.ON.
The ongoing project sees Pisces sampling roughly monthly, for a 6-hour period each time, quantifying numbers of fish and crustaceans impinged, and the weight of weed and other debris. Additional studies include fish survival trials, and monitoring of glass eels and elvers, to ensure compliance with the Eels (England and Wales) Regulations 2009.

One operational issue which has influenced the sampling strategy has been the influx of vast quantities of sea chervil (Alcyonidium diaphanum) and white weed (Sertularia cupressina) at certain times of the year. Good design of sampling protocol is vital for obtaining valid and useful data.
